I would just like to emphasise to staff working at the Oundle shop (and to all other charity shops also), that not everyone taking in donated items is simply clearing out unwanted things.
I took my friend 7yrs to be able to bring himself to sort out his late wife's clothes and shoes. He then deliberately chose the Air Ambulance charity to donate to, as it is local and had personal connections with his experiences.
I telephoned the shop ahead of taking the items and was told that " only 2-3 bags were permissible, owing to lack of storage space". My friend had hung the clothing on hangers and covered them in 'suit protectors' to avoid squashing them into black bags. This meant there were more than 2-3 individual packages but a very pleasant lady told us that this was okay. I had explained to this lady what the circumstances behind the donations were.
When we had finished taking the items into the store room and were about to leave, a second lady then said - abruptly we felt - "Did you call before you brought all those things in? It's only 2 or 3 bags allowed". I replied that I had indeed called, but that I would have been quite happy to take some of the items elsewhere, and would still be happy to do so.
This lady had watched us going up and down the stairs to the storeroom and had made no comment until the last second, and I don't see what she hoped to achieve by doing so.
What she did achieve was to make what should have been as positive an experience as possible for my friend, a somewhat negative one. Whilst no-one expects undue gratitude for supporting a charity, he was left feeling that the donation of his wife's belongings was more of an inconvenience than a benefit.
