I always hesitate before leaving a negative review. I was not lucky enough to be warned before I signed up my daughter for Kids Are Broadway Bound.

My daughter wanted to try acting. I looked up reviews online, and found Broadway Bound. Their website advertised that the students learn “all aspects of live theater”, and that they provide “personal and tailored instruction to meet the needs of every child”. My daughter does not seek attention and is by nature introverted. After reading the information on the website, I thought this class – even though expensive – would be a good learning experience for her.

The time commitment was extraordinary – 2 times a week for 1h45min. Parents were not allowed to come and watch the classes, so I was unable to witness how much of personal and tailored instruction each child received. It was not until later that I learned that the instructors work with the talented kids who are the main characters, paying the absolute minimal attention to everyone else.

4 months of “classes” resulted in a performance. The last few rehearsals were at a high school and required all students to be there. When I came to the performance, I expected my daughter to perform. The entire show evolved around the lead characters.

There was a second group of characters which had some dancing and singing in their supporting roles. About 5 kids did not belong to either group. They were used in the performance as props. My daughter had 3 lines to say in her role, and nobody could hear her. When I asked her why she did not have a microphone (like almost all other kids), she said that there were not enough microphones, so she and two or three other kids did not get one.

Not only was this a waste of money (I asked them for a refund, but they refused), but also a tremendous waste of time, and an irreversible discouragement from acting. My daughter learned that not every kid receives personal and tailored instruction, and that instructors work with their favorites while neglecting people like her.

If you are a parent thinking of signing your child up, it might be worth it – if your child is talented enough to get a lead role. For kids who are just beginners and want to learn, they will learn what it feels like to be neglected, and their self esteem will suffer.

I was ready and willing to place my child in a program with this company a few years back and I felt like I had to hound them for info. I emailed, called, and finally... I showed up. When they found out how many times I had tried to contact them, they offered tickets to their show to see what they were about... and I never heard from them again. Not impressed.
