My experience with Merchistoun Hall and Park and Horndean Community Association was nothing short of appalling. The lack of basic hospitality and care was staggering - every interaction was marked with an air of indifference or pettiness. The manager's attitude left a sour impression, and was unprofessional and discourteous. Whoever was in charge of bookings was entirely inept, which compounded the disappointmend and frustration of the entire day. Not to mention, the facilities themselves were well below standard, failing to deliver even the most basic expectations. Overall, a profoundly disappointing experience and unworthy of any recommendation, rather a warning - enter here at your own peril.

Merchistoun Hall, once a beacon of community spirit and outdoor activity, has regrettably become a source of deep disappointment for locals. Eight years ago, when my family and I relocated to this area, we were captivated by the hall's open gates and vibrant gardens, which were meticulously maintained and teeming with life. There was a quaint playground equipped with a swing set that was a favourite among the children. The nature trail, fondly referred to as the dragon park by my kids, provided a safe and serene environment for them to play and explore the wonders of nature. It was an idyllic spot for recreation, where we often engaged in leisurely bike rides and unwound on the lush grass.

However, the cheerful scenes of the past have drastically changed. The management has erected barriers, replacing accessibility with exclusion. The once welcoming gates are now persistently locked, denying entry to the families who once enjoyed its surroundings. This shift is not only visible during our evening drives past the hall, when we observe the unyielding locked gates, but is also evident in the state of neglect that has overcome the area. The planters, once brimming with flowers and shrubs, now lay abandoned and overgrown. The nature path and the pond, which used to be the centrepiece of our visits, have been left to deteriorate, reflecting stark neglect.

The lack of community involvement is palpable. There seems to be a disinterest or perhaps a lack of initiative from those in charge to maintain this once-thriving community asset. It is truly disheartening to see such a prime local environment fall into disrepair and become virtually unused. This hall and its surroundings, which could serve as a magnificent hub for community gatherings and outdoor activities, are sadly being wasted. The transformation from a communal treasure to a locked and forgotten space represents a significant loss for our community, and a poignant reflection of neglected potential.

I always love for forming my various magic and disco shows at this hall. It’s great for kids parties.

Harassed and abused at our event by the caretaker & the management and committee refuse to address how they have ”resolved” this. He even took photos of young girls throughout our event without any permission. Disgusting behaviour.
