Visiting the Mendip Hills and Cheddar Gorge was nothing short of awe-inspiring. Nestled in the heart of Somerset, this area offers a perfect blend of dramatic natural landscapes, fascinating history, and outdoor adventure.

Cheddar Gorge itself is truly one of England’s most stunning natural landmarks. The towering limestone cliffs, winding road, and panoramic views from the cliff-top walks are simply unforgettable. Whether you're an avid hiker or just someone who enjoys a scenic stroll, the trails around the gorge offer something for everyone. The walk to the top is well worth the effort—once there, you’re rewarded with sweeping views across the Somerset Levels and beyond.

The Mendip Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is equally captivating. Rolling hills, charming countryside, and hidden caves make this a paradise for nature lovers and photographers alike. There’s a peacefulness here that feels like a true escape from the hustle and bustle of modern life.

Cheddar village itself is full of character, with its quaint shops, cozy cafés, and of course, the famous Cheddar cheese tasting opportunities. Don’t miss the chance to explore the caves—Gough’s Cave and Cox’s Cave are both fascinating and full of prehistoric history.

Whether you're here for a day trip or a longer stay, the Mendip Hills and Cheddar Gorge provide an unforgettable experience. It’s a perfect destination for families, couples, or solo adventurers. Highly recommended for anyone looking to reconnect with nature and discover one of the UK’s most iconic landscapes.

Parking can be found either in the village or around the winding main road, payment necessary, toilets can also be found in the main village free of charge. I would recommend taking a good pair of boots and plenty of water- theres lots of uneven ground with plenty of opportunities for slips, trips and falls. Well worth the danger though. You do not need to purchase tickets to explore the hills as they can be accessed at many different points, but would recommend planning a route or having some familiarity with the area and different possible routes. I would also recommend buying tickets to the cave etc to enter through Jacobs ladder and do the 3 mile circular hike, but as stated, this isn’t necessary if you dont want to.

I was lucky enough to be Engaged on the top of one of those beautiful mountain cliff tops, and would suggest anyone in love with someone who also enjoys spending some precious 1-1 time together in nature do the same. Proud to say ‘YES!’ with the goats and falcons watching.

we didnt want to pay to enter the gorge or other attractions as they were not as appealing to us. We have previously been in caves / gorges so know what to expect to see. However we drove from an Area in Somerset (Locking) around 35 min to this area. Its a lovely drive through the clifs and there is a lovely river and stream. We got hungry so decided to eat at one of the cafes ( their fresh scones are amazing ! )

We just did a little walking and had a stroll through the shops. Nice few hours out.

My partner and I regularly hike around the Mendips, in various locations. It's pretty much beautiful throughout and it's hard to go wrong. Grab an OS map, or an app such as All Trails, and get out there!
