What a beautiful location, complemented by the warm and joyful welcome from Steve. After a long day on the hills our spirits were lifted by his cheery personality. The room and all facilities were great too. Amazing to wake up and sit outside as the sun came up with a wonderful breakfast being prepared in the background. So quiet and tranquil, planning a return trip already. Enjoy!

Just after the East end of Ennerdale water, after a long days hike from St Bees,I was delighted to reach the hostel.
The view of the fell from the windows was incredible and I was lucky enough to have a clear evening to enjoy the birds and the peace.
Room wise, it's a dorm so if you aren't comfortable sharing with others doing come. But for me it was a good place to meet others and enjoy the company after a day walking alone.
The food was solid, breakfast especially, and the served a couple of beers which was nice.

We called in to see if food was available as we were too slow for our booked meal at Black Sail. Steve took in the situation at a glance and immediately arranged for us to be fetched as he is the warden of both sites (how on earth does he manage that?). As two 80 year olds we had accepted we would arrive very late and hungry but he wisely sorted us out. We had a beer and a very entertaining chat with him.

One night stay at the YHA. I found the manager Steve to be unwelcoming and dismissive from arrival. If we had the option to stay somewhere else we would have done. ||We ordered the unlimited breakfast. When breakfast came, we were all (several other people staying at the hostel) expecting to get UNLIMITED, not the case. When a fellow guest politely asked for more food, he was basically shouted down by Steve. He told us all he had been offered more when booking in, which was a complete lie. As four separate guests said he had not given the choice of how many sausages, bacon (etc) we wanted. He would not listen, just shouted louder. The fellow guest cancelled his next nights stay. |I would not recommend staying at Ennerdale YHA, I have never experienced such unprofessional management and such an aggressive attitude at a YHA.

Absolutely stunning location, this is a quintessential youth hostel with a cosy dining room come lounge. Steve the warden is superb and even upgraded us to the 16th Century farmhouse due to booking issues. Simple but tasty evening meal for a reasonable price and a hearty breakfast to set us further on our way along the coast to coast path.

Great location for many walks & hikes, comfortable bunks, good food and the use of a kitchen with good facilities. Friendly sociable environment. We chatted with many coast to coast walkers from various parts of the UK and abroad.

Stayed one night. Negative review not so much about stay but the attitude , response and lack of manners from warden. On treatment of a fellow guest, unknown to me. Shouting at guest when guest was reasonable firm but polite, this was over unlimited breakfast which warden had not told me and wife either orders completed by him on arrival. I found him rude too.

Fantastic stay,| Brilliant friendly staff Steve & Kev were super guys nothing was any trouble, we stayed in the barn it was very clean beds comfortable pillows fluffy and nice thick quilts.|Lovely walk from the Barn to Black Sail pure bliss being off grid in such a beautiful area.
