I've visited quite a few care homes in the area over the last few years to see a family friend having respite care following a major stroke some years ago, on entering care homes I'd now come to expect a relatively dull, usually noisy, and often odorous atmosphere. What a pleasant surprise it was therefore when my wife and I called to see him last Saturday at the Avonleigh Gardens care home in Oldham where he'd been admitted the previous day to recover after leaving hospital following a chest infection and pneumonia. On entering the building, the difference was immediately apparent in that the place was quiet, and there wasn't the usual unpleasant odour which often pervades care homes looking after elderly residents.The atmosphere was light and airy, and the staff which we came into contact with were extremely well presented and courteous. When we arrived, my friend asked if he could perhaps be taken to his room for the length of our visit, so as to afford some privacy, and his request was dealt with straight away. His room was plain, but was clean, nicely decorated, and very comfortable. The most important thing of course was that he appeared to be very happy there. We were so impressed by this care home, that on our return home we contacted my friend's wife to pass on our findings to her. I have also since contacted Avonleigh Gardens to congratulate them on the presentation of the care home.
