I joined Burren and Whitaker construction in 2023 in hope to start my career in construction management, I had some previous background of construction and heard that burren and Whitaker are a great company to guide you and support your journey of studying along side college to get a recognised hnc diploma whilst working among themselves. However, hand on heart, this is the worst company I have ever worked for and I hope if you’re reading this you do not think twice about applying for this embarrassment of horrendous company to work for. Where do I start. Being a trainee site supervisor, and not knowing every detail about construction, I would ask loads of questions, sometimes even double check something if I was asked to by my manager, Stewart. When most of the time my replies back from him would be filled with sarcastic horrible comments, and If he was having a bad day which was most of the time, I would get sworn at for not knowing the answer or a “use your brain”. repsonse, Which is totally unacceptable way to treat a new employee. The company also had taken on to many jobs that it could handle in the time frame given meaning most jobs were unsupervised and leaving the sites in a complete mess. The manager Stewart had taken on so much work to the point that both directors had to get involved end attend site in which they were extremely unhappy with how everything was running. They were both very horrible, blunt men that treated every employee like mud off the floor.
Also whilst working and taking a lunch break after working for several hours on end; I would constantly get Stewart Harris or either Andy Burren asking me why I’m not back to work, even though I just sat down and started a break; and then getting informed that I should be staying from 7am-6pm on site even though my hours would be 7:30-4pm? When questioned why I should be staying longer when not getting paid for it, no comment was made. I was used as a labourer pretty much most of the time working here even though my job role was a site supervisor. I truly think all managers need to have a sit down and learn some basic humanities skills and some respect for employees as well as sub contractors. Company also fails to pay for its subcontractors in full amounts leading to even more disputes among the team. I was promised a career and was treated absolutely shocking. This has really affected my mental heath to this day at my current job as always feeling like I’m not doing anything right. Company expects you to work for free and not pay you for the hours you do. I truly suggest no one to apply here as it’s honestly a horrendous company and defiantly broke health and safety rules at Roehampton university. Please avoid at all costs. Poor company and racist people run it. Avoid
