I had a respite break at the Ashford International at the end of last week, 23-25 Jan which coincided with my birthday through Carefree. It was great. Just what the Doctor ordered - had I been able to get an appointment! Check-in was easy at the desk. I had a large disabled room on the ground floor with a large wet room. Tea and coffee making and the hairdryer was in 1 half of the wardrobe, the ironing board and clothes hangers were in the other half on a rack that you pulled down, it took some pulling so I decided to manage, not having much to hang up. Nice dressing table and mirror and a luggage rack. The bed was lovely but a tad high for me to get in and out of as I'm not tall. The quilt was just right warmth wise - I find Premier Inn quilts rather too fat and hot. Lots of lovely lighting. Hair and body wash was in the shower, a fixed moisturiser like they had in the disabled wc would have been nice. Little boxes were by the basin with soap, shower cap and one with 2 cotton wool balls and some q-tips. The restaurant was very nice and the prices weren't as bad as I thought. My birthday afternoon tea was ÂŁ25, should have had the prosecco with it for ÂŁ5 extra. It was more than I could eat so I took a doggy bag back to my room. I didn't have the 8oz fillet steak at ÂŁ38 though - I did think about it for a while. Butterflied chicken peri peri was delish and not at all hot or spicy and the seabass and giant couscous - who knew you could get giant couscous! Just under ÂŁ40 bought me a very nice dinner, dessert (Biscoff cheesecake highly recommended) and a very tasty G&T. The Quencher bar near reception opened all day for snacks and drinks from 9am, comfortable seating, dining height tables as well as coffee tables and a couple of higher bench tables. Unfortunately I didn't get to use the spa but people were back and forth in their dressing gowns to the Quencher bar so it must be quite popular. Plenty of parking outside and the hotel is easy to find; M20, J9, 1st exit from roundabout and 1st exit at the next roundabout. It was very busy so no disabled spaces available. Reception said there were several things going on and I may like to move it later. I'd put my badge in it and didn't bother as I was on the end of a line so I had room to get in and out. You do have to record your registration in Reception to avoid parking charges. All the staff were great, Daniela in Housekeeping, maintenance, Lexie in the Restaurant, reception. They were all very pleasant and helpful. Two things a bit annoying, there was no toilet brush in the wet room. Don't think I've ever been in a wc with no toilet brush and the shower didn't drain, even overnight, so I had to report that when I left, hence the 4*s. I'd certainly be happy to stay there again, maybe on my birthday next year. Unfortunately I can't upload my photos. Lauryn at Carefree was excellent. She confirmed my booking and even reminded me earlier in the week. I shall certainly be taking my next break with Carefree. My cared for person survived, he even said - it grieves me to say it but I missed you. Ah, such a romantic (not). Unfortunately I couldn't upload my photos.

A huge thank you to Carers Space for making this break possible! I stayed at St Giles in central London, right in the heart of the city and just a short walk from Euston Station – so easy and convenient. The hotel was lovely and truly understood the work carers do, going above and beyond to make my stay special. From the thoughtful room upgrade to the free breakfast and welcoming goody bag, it was a much-needed and appreciated break. It’s wonderful to know there are organizations like Carers Space that really support carers and understand the importance of self-care. Thank you again for this incredible opportunity!

What a brilliant service. I’ve had a short break from Carefree for the last three years and it’s made a massive difference to me. I can’t get funding for breaks in my area and caring for 2 people I’m usually close to burnout, these short breaks are a life saver for carers and I’m immensely grateful. Thanks a million Carefree xxx Jennie Reeves
