Not really sure how someone could rate this less than 5 stars.

We came here to start our self guided 1066 tour as this makes sense chronologically.

We purchased the overseas 9 day pass, so this castle was included. There is magic in the walls. So much history, too much to write about. I recommend reading up on the history before you come, it will be more interesting.

The WW2 touch is simply amazing. Centuries of history live in these walls.

If you are not into history, the walk alone is very nice. I highly recommend giving yourself about 2 hours.

We took a short drive down to the coast to take a picture at the “spot” that the Normans landed (yes I know, that spot has been reclaimed by the sea, but still, use your imagination).

Car park around the corner within walking distance and an overflow lot for a fee.

Not a planned visit, it was one of those moments when you see something interesting as you are driving past and are faced with that split decision “stop or carry on”. I’m so glad we stopped.
£9 entrance fee per adult but we chose to renew our English Heritage membership and make this the 1st of a year long adventure.
Recommend getting the audio for context as you are walking around. Signage is good but there is far more detail on the audio.
Lovely pub opposite 😁

What an awesome experience! So much fun here and so much history to enjoy. You get a free audio guide with your ticket, which is rather talkative to be honest, but it's fun to be able to select the audio guides to match where you are and listen to interesting tidbits about the castle. I absolutely loved the visit, and enjoyed all of the extra information. I was blown away by the age of the Castle, and how many different folks had used it over the centuries. Unfortunately, I was not able to walk the full large wall, but now I have an excellent excuse to come back. As if I needed one! 😁

We had a very interesting visit to the castle today. We have often walked through the grounds but have never been inside. There's a very good audio guide,an exhibition and lots more to see. Nice little shop too filled with gifts to buy. I would highly recommend a visit.

Good information boards/displays around the castle. The archaeological artifact display was interesting. The dungeon was hidden round a corner before the ticket office - we nearly missed it.
Limited shelter if there is rain. A few benches and chairs are set out in the castle grounds and in the outer area.

Public toilets next to the pub outside the grounds were well maintained.

Visited this castle recently while backpacking through the area. The Roman walls of this ancient Saxon Shore fort are stunning, and the portions thay still staff appear to be managed well. The medieval castle itself was a fascinating place, especially the part of its history where there were Canadian and American soldiers stationed here during WWII (as a Canadian, it was neat to come across some of our history so far from home!). The staff working the castle were very friendly and knowledgable, with great insight into the history here.

Enjoyed this very much a pleasant walk around and steps up the tower and steps down into the dungeon and basement. Very informative staff and useful noticeboards. The castle was used right through the ages.

Nice piece of history. Have driven past the outer walls many times and never realised how big the grounds were or how substantial the ruins are, various rooms have been utilized in the tower remains for exhibits. Decent audio with price of admission which is reasonable. Parking close by. Probably a little less fun on a wet day.
