Portland old light house use, I think, around the 1960s. Now a bird Observatory and over the years there's so much birds flocking to the island, it's unbelievable.
What beautiful place of history the isle of Portland has.

I think portland has become my favourite place to be, this is our second trip and it doesn't disappoint at all, the scenery is exceptional and despite the weather being gorgeous and portland being busy there were plenty of spaces to just sit down, spot wildlife and just relax and watch the world go by.

I visited today and found the warden, Rob if I remember correctly? to be very welcoming. It created a very good impression as I'd never visited before and wasn't sure what to expect.
A couple of other regular birders there were also welcoming.
This would certainly want me to return and, beds permitting, to stay at the observatory.
Although a quiet time of the year I nevertheless saw some good birds at sea.

This used to be the Old Lower Lighthouse at Portland Bill which was decommissioned in 1906 to make way for the construction of the
current working lighthouse as seen today.
It is an ideal place if you are a bird watcher.
There is also accommodation, see leaflet in photo's.

We've just spent a brilliant couple of days on Portland, with a night in the Obs Lighthouse cottage. It was just perfect for us. We came with everything we needed (the info on their site says what's required) and then lacked for nothing. A really relaxed weekend with some great walking, birding and wonderfully helpful staff milling around. It's wonderfully informal and it was a pleasure to be subsumed into the atmosphere for a few days. We'll definitely be going back. A lot.

Gem hidden away on Portland Bill in an old lighthouse. Well worth joining if you're interested in birds or nature in general.
