This is our favourite RSPB. We have been visiting here for years and years now, We are members of the RSPB and visit here and other reserves all year round in all weathers. Hq has a bit of everything, long walks, short walks, gardens, a pond with carp, a café and a shop and toilets. I would and do often recommend Sandy RSPB to people to visit as we enjoy it for it's variety of walks and scenery. We like to see it change through the seasons. There is plenty of parking too.

So before we ran out of good weather, I decided to take my son (under 2) to the RSPB Lodge in Sandy. It's under 40 mins from MK with no traffic. Here's some pictures and info for you in case you decide to go along. Your £6 parking fee is all you need for the day really. This gets you a little map from the shop by the car park. The facilities are there, but are basic. Specifically there are toilets separate from the shop building, a bit cold but usable. If you have a little one, changing facilities in the ladies (didn't see if also in gents) but there is a high step to go in, if you have a buggy. I'd recommend taking food unless you are ok with basic cold snacks and machine hot drinks, from the shop. They hadn't got their delivery today so very limited choice. The map shows a few proper walking routes suitable for older children, but my little one and I (with a buggy) stayed close to the centre of the reserve utilising the lovely woodland walks. Absolutely fine with the buggy, but I'd recommend a sturdy model (bigger wheels) and be prepared to get a bit muddy. We we're able to see the gardens, pond, beatiful old trees and the huge owl carving near the old historic building, all lovely. Listened out for the birds, tried to watch the buzzards flying over head etc. But the bit we enjoyed most, (and that I suspect many older children could spend ages in the warmer weather) was the Wild Play Trail. Basically a fenced adventure area, made entirely by volunteers in the summer this year and it's fab. Definitely one I'll go back to when my son's a bit bigger 😁 with time, patience and concentration possible from your little ones, there are lots of birds to hear and look out for as well as squirrels running round, fish in the pond, massive variety of trees, different flowers throughout spring (bluebells etc) and of course an abundance of insects and exercise!

For the headquarters of the RSPB I was really looking forward to the visit. To say I was slightly disappointed would be honest. Granted they can't guarantee what Birds you will see but the hide was extremely disappointing. I was expecting more opportunity in hides to see the birds slightly closer.
