The Volunteer Life Brigade stationed on the South Tyne Pier at South Shields has been searching lives since 1866, today members of  South Shields Volunteer Life Brigade remain “Always Ready”.

The brigade was formed in 1866, following a wreck that took 32 lives on the treacherous Black Middens at the Tynemouth side of the Tyne Harbour.
