Sunderland Royal hospital has been offering great medical services. It has its 24/7 emergency services. The hospital is clean and neat and the nurses are doing exceptionally good. Offering g great services to humanity. There is a little renovation going on on the outside and this is well managed to avoid any form of crisis. Great service

I recently visited the Emergency Department at Sunderland Royal Hospital due to severe sciatica pain. I was unable to walk, sit, or pass urine and experienced numbness in my left leg. Despite the seriousness of my condition, I waited over 9 hours to be seen by a doctor. When my turn finally came, doctors from the psychotherapy and orthopedics departments assessed me and identified my case as serious, marking it as a “red flag.”

They informed me that I would need an MRI urgently, which would be done in the morning. Until then, they assured me that I would be moved to a ward and provided with a bed because I could not sit or walk due to the extreme pain. I was accompanied by my sister, brother-in-law, and wife, who were told they could not accompany me to the ward, which I understood and accepted.

However, what followed was an appalling experience. A doctor came and instructed me to leave the room I was lying in and wait in the general waiting area instead. I explained that I could not walk due to the severity of my pain, yet she rudely insisted and took away the wheelchair that had been provided for me. Despite my repeated requests, she refused to assist me, leaving me to endure excruciating pain.

Her behavior was unprofessional and lacking in basic empathy. I strongly felt that her attitude towards me was discriminatory and racist, as she showed no regard for my condition or well-being. For the first time, I felt like an outsider in what I consider my home country.

Once my family had left as instructed, no staff came to check on me or offer any support. I felt abandoned, humiliated, and deeply disappointed by the lack of care.
Now, I am waiting at general waiting area

Sunderland Royal Hospital. All the staff is marvellous and they serve you well. There is plenty of room to move around. Wheelchair friendly. Have 1 restaurant and 2 cafes, 1 small shop for general things like magazines, cards, sweets, crisps, chocolate, newborn baby items, first aid items, and toiletries. 1 small cafe combined with a shop. There are drinks machines. There lots of toilets and lifts.. Good size parking also with multistorey. People are coming & going all the time.

Impeccable care by Darren and the team in Paediatrics/Children's A&E. Explained everything extremely thoroughly, we were seen almost immediately and both myself and my daughter felt she was in the best of hands. Left with a well explained treatment plan and lots of valuable information. Thank you 🌟

I will however point out 2 things that I found unacceptable. The parking is a truly disgraceful, my husband drove around for 45 minutes to try and get parked. And secondly the pharmacy is not fit for purpose. It would be much better to send the prescription to a local pharmacy closer to where patients live, as opposed to everyone in the hospital being sent to the same pharmacist. 90 minutes wait for a prescription is ludicrous.

My mother has been in hospital now for 11 weeks after a fall. She's been looked after on D & E wards so well.

She is now on F61 and has deteriorated so much on Friday 1st Nov visited her on pm and I was shocked at the state she was in blood coming out of her mouth I asked a nurse for help and she totally ignored my request for help.

The health care assistant on the ward ran to help and went over to the nurse who ignored her too, she had to ask a nurse from another bay to administer suction, i can't praise those two nurse and the doctors who came in to help my mam.

The other nurse has been spoken to but I am still not happy with it.

Hopefully she will recover soon so I can get her out of this hospital into a temporary care home and then home.

I wish I could give it a zero.
We waited over an hour before triaged, which immediately showed a dangerously high heart rate, which we had already gone through 111 and Urgent Care.

We were escorted into a High Accuity room, which obviously hadn't been cleaned after the previous patient.

It was obvious from the monitor that my partners heart rated was over 180. So the Doctor prescribed a small dose of bisoprolol. That took 30 minutes to be given.
This didn't work and a further dose prescribed, that didn't come for 45 minutes.
That didn't work and a further dose prescribe. That never arrived. However, the nurse did attend wearing blue gloves from treating another patient.
After a 4th attempt it was decided to admit my partner. Cutting story short but eventually sent to a ward, but the bed had no heart monitor so she couldn't be monitored, she never got a bed with a monitor, but she was on the ward all day.
Without the monitor, they wouldn't give her more medication.

So if they had a monitor, they could have brought her heart rate down a lot quicker and saved the NHS a bed and a few £1000

The nurses were on the whole great, the doctors were doing what they could.
But this hospital is failing people..

There are a lot of other issues, like no food or just a sandwich.. my partners diabetic ... no checks either

The doctor told my partner to stay dehydrated but no water was provided at any time ... we had to buy it

Lucky she had a fairly serious issue that triggered a response, other people looked to have waited all night and still were waiting when I popped home to get my partners medication ... dont get me started on that

Dear Sirs,
I was admitted to Sunderland hospital in the early hours of Tuesday 5th. of November. I had a blockage in my urinary system and was in agony and dispair. After going through A&E, I was treated promptly and efficiently by all concerned but just as importantly to me, with great kindness and consideration. By the afternoon of the same day I was back at home, comfortable and savouring what I consider to be little short of a miraculous recovery.
It has been a week now and with the good advice from your staff I am well on the way to a full recovery. I would therefore like to convey my appreciation to Sunderland hospital in general for the excellence of service and in particular to the staff of A&E, including reception, the Urology department and I am sorry I cannot remember the names of those that I met. The staff of ward C31 were kind and lovely and of course the emergency surgical team, who raised a smile as they knocked me out!! I am forever grateful. Thank you.

I went to see a Professor Michael Norton. Cardiologist… he made me feel so at ease . Didn’t just see me about heart but sorted other problems out also. Made another appointment . And I cannot thank him enough. A credit to you all
