Another lovely old church (circa 13th century) no longer in regular use in a delightful setting near the foot of north side of the South Downs.
Access is restricted to certain hours (open until about 17:00), but is well worth the effort; there is a stunning mural of the royal coat of arms over altar and some really nice memorials made from what looks to be marble.

On my visit, the church felt so welcoming. There was a table in the entrance with hot tea, biscuits and treats for donation. I felt like I was walking into history. The smell of old timber hit me first. It was pleasant but telling of the centuries the church stood. Everything I saw was interesting. The ancient timbers overhead keep it intact. The pulpit, which seemed so small to me, an average sized person of this age. The scribing on the walls. It was a church I had researched for a few years, and seeing it was an emotional experience.

Not an active CE church but still maintained to the Victorian functions. The high box pews prevent families mixing with unclean and smelly commoners! A feast for the eyes is the ship hull roof supporting clay tiles, all refurbished respecting the original craftspeople. Outside the materials from William Penn's house have built a nave more recently than the body of the church. The views from around the church cover South to the Park South Downs and North to the Hogs back North Downs. Some lovely walks from this point take you to through ancient woods and ways. The pub in Thakeham White Lion is a perfect watering stop and has an excellent menu too.

Harmonious tones of wood and a peaceful setting. Well worth hunting for this little church (now deconsecrated).
