Attended several workshops/ intro sessions with Oxford Samaritans. They were very welcoming and friendly. All volunteers I spoke to were very helpful, knowledgeable and passionate about the work they did.

Unfortunately, due to having a long term disability (epilepsy) and the risks this posed I was unable to work as a volunteer. The charity was unable to provide adequate provisions that would have supported my disability. It was a shame this information was not more clear prior to signing up with the service. Guidance was nowhere to be seen on the website and it was 3 months after signing up that my application was cancelled. It was also a disappointment that there are very limited roles for people with a disability such as mine.

I would warn anyone with a long term health condition / disability to disclose it early on in the volunteering process in order to avoid disappointment. The service is lacking in transparency and guidance around these conditions. For me, personally, it would have been good to have had this info early on.

Whilst I can’t recommend them to people with long term disabilities, I would actively encourage anyone else who is passionate about what the Samaritans do to volunteer with the Oxford team. They are an otherwise very professional and welcoming branch.

A close friend of mine serves at this branch, and they're always full of praise about the great community, support and friendliness of all the volunteers here. The Samaritans provide an incredible service that has helped countless people. They deserve all the praise in the world.
