I was truly captivated by the University Church of St Mary the Virgin during my visit to Oxford. Its stunning architecture and beautiful stained glass windows left a lasting impression on me. I appreciated the fact that entry to the church is free, allowing visitors to experience its serene atmosphere and rich history. I learned that this church serves as the university’s official church and has played a significant role in Oxford’s academic life since it was originally built in the 13th century. It has witnessed centuries of history, including important ceremonies and events. However, I found out that there is a fee to access the tower, which offers a breathtaking view of the city. The beauty of the church itself was more than enough to make it one of the highlights of my trip to Oxford.

The University Church of St Mary the Virgin, located on High Street in Oxford, is one of the city's most iconic and historic buildings. Known for its stunning architecture and rich heritage, it serves as both the university church for the University of Oxford and a vibrant parish church. Its roots date back to the 13th century, and over the centuries, it has been a key center of religious, academic, and social life in Oxford.

The church’s architecture is a blend of medieval Gothic and English Gothic styles, with intricate stone carvings, soaring arches, and a magnificent spire, one of the tallest in Oxford, offering panoramic views of the city from its tower. The interior is equally impressive, with a spacious nave, beautiful stained glass windows, and an ornate 15th-century pulpit. The church was also a key site during the English Reformation, hosting influential theological debates and sermons.

Today, the University Church of St Mary the Virgin remains a popular destination for visitors and locals alike, who are drawn to its historical significance, architectural beauty, and serene atmosphere. Visitors can also enjoy the café within the church, making it a unique place to explore Oxford's heritage and enjoy views across the historic university city.

With its intricate exteriors and magnificent interiors, the church is a must visit spot on any visit to Oxford. Be sure to pay a visit to the tower as it offers unblocked views over the city and several notable spots such as the Radcliffe Camera.

We did the trip to the top of the church and it was well worth it! You have to wait for your turn to go up (as it's very small on the top and the spiral staircase is very narrow - not good if your elderly or eat too many pies!) The view from the top is well worth it. It was one of our highlights when in Oxford and was on our first day so allowed us to see what we had to explore for a week. We waited about 20-25 mins for our turn to go up on a Sunday afternoon.

The views are nice from the top but not really worth the wait time.
I waited more than 1hr on the church bench to be able to go up.
There is a £6 fee as well. They closed the queue at around 4:15pm to accommodate people already in line. The church closes at 5pm.
