A family of four, we have just stayed for 3 nights, camping in the grounds. It's smaller compared to some other YHA's we've stayed in but excellent all round. The location (a short walk to the village centre) is great, the facilities, including the kitchen, shower rooms, eating and lounge areas have everything you need and are kept clean thoroughly. The camping area is a small, flat garden that fits 6-8 good sized tents. There are picnic tables and benches in the camping area so if you're camping you don't need to bring any tables or camping chairs. The staff were all really friendly and hard working. Helmsley itself is absolutely beautiful and we will definitely be back to this gem of a place.

Friendly hostel, cosy and welcoming lounge/dining area, only 5 mins walk to Helmsley Market Square. National Birds of Prey Centre at Duncombe Park (an easy walk from the hostel) well worth a visit, don't miss the flying sessions! Also try the Helmsley Brewery on Bridge Street, we recommend Howardian Gold.

We’ve just had another lovely stay at YHA Helmsley. The accommodation is basic but brilliant, and so clean & tidy. There are plentiful amenities, including a fully stocked self-catering kitchen. We stay in the 5 bed en suite room and it is perfect for us all. Thank you! We will be back soon.

August 2023 - visit 1

We stayed in the 5 bed en suite room for 3 nights. It is a large room with plenty of space and a private bathroom. It was clean, comfortable and great as a base for exploring the area. The staff are brilliant & we’ve had a great stay.

Absolutely brilliant stay again! We had the 5 bed en suite room and it was perfect. The hostel was generally much busier this time but still plenty of space for everybody. We stayed two nights and everybody had a good sleep. The facilities are excellent - the kitchen especially! The staff are all brilliant and genuinely care about the hostel & it’s guests. On the second day we had a walk into Helmsley and were pleasantly surprised to find it full of cafes, nice little shops etc. The YHA is ideally located for visits to York, Scarborough & Whitby.

We’ll definitely be back!

Friendly and helpful welcome when we checked in. First thing we noticed was how clean and well organised the place was, and this was maintained right through our visit - every day the public areas, particularly the member's kitchen, were in perfect order whenever we got back in the late afternoon.||Public areas comprise a large dining area with different size tables, at the end of this are sofas around a woodburner. Off this is a large and well equipped Member's kitchen, with 2 microwaves, 2 fridges etc. Far better than so many hostels nowadays. There's also a small separate lounge with a TV. Upstairs plenty of toilets and showers so no queuing. ||Outside the car park at the front is very tight and rather muddy, which caused a few issues, but there is on road parking at the front and side too - the hostel is on a quiet side road so no worries about leaving the car out. ||Convenient spot - it's very quiet with just distant noise from the A170 road but very handy with the market square reached via quiet roads and an alley within 5 minutes. ||When we visited the other guests were a mixture of cyclist groups, families, couples and a few bikers. This is just luck but everyone there with us was friendly, relaxed and mainly chatty which added to the good atmosphere.||Shout to the Baz the warden who was on duty, great ambassador for the YHA with his hard work and sense of humour.

We had a lovely night here after a day at Flamingo land, before taking our bikes to Sutton Bank.|Baz who seemed to run the place was friendly, and clearly took pride in running a clean and efficient hostel.||It was a lovely weekend and there were several families camping in the garden.||I believe there were just 8 bedrooms so this place is small and friendly.||We got fish n chips for tea from the chippy 5mins walk away. There was also a Co Op, just a couple more minutes walk away closer to the centre. The YHA Hostel does not offer an evening meal but there is a decent equipped kitchen so you can cook your own dinner.||Baz cooked us a delcious breakfast, which was served at 8.30, and there was continental to help ourselves to as well. (Kids eat free). He asked at check in about any dietary requirements; I said I avoid dairy, so there was soya milk avaliable at breakfast.||Our bunk beds were typical YHA ones and were comfortable. We had a large 6 person room (for 4 of us) and the toilet and showers were next to our room. The showers were hot and powerful and the facilites were clean and well kept.|Our bedroom was clean and spacious. Each bed had its own plug socket and USB charger and night light||As well as the dining / lounge area (with wood stove and logs avaliable) there is a playroom which has a TV and some toys for children. The garden was secure and it was nice to eat dinner in the garden. We bought a bottle of wine (£15) as own alcohol is strictly not allowed, and soft drinks are avaliable from reception too.||We mentioned that we had our bikes with us and were offered the use of the secure cycle store. The car park was not big enough to accomodate our car (Land Rover Discovery + 4 bikes on the tow bar rack on the back) but we felt safe leaving the car and bikes (which were locked on) overnight on the road. (car would have fitted easily without bikes on back)||There was free wifi from the cloud, but we had full phone signal so found it easier to use our (unlimited) data.|There was water bottle refill stations in reception.||This is a delightful small hostel, which is clean and cheap and cheerful and I would most definitely return.||Thanks to Baz who works so hard to make sure everything is running smoothly.||This is a lovely small and friendly hostel and I would definitely return.||Also worth noting that check in is between 5pm and 8.30pm only. You can not arrive at the hostel outisde of these times, but once you have checked in you have the code so can access 24/7 throughout the rest of your stay.
