This delightful cottage is accessed through a 2 mile walk from the station or a car park south of Ranmore common . Wonderful history of how it came about in the 1930s to be read there. Lovely lounge log fire no TV . Great low ceilinga and door into dorm room . Showers and loos outside in grounds as well as safari tents picnic BBQ area . |I tok wrong turning on way ther so came across through the woods it looked like an enchanted cottage that you would find in a childrens book . Grea area to explore too

A wonderfully secluded well kept hostel - ideal for a weekend away with 14 friends (as long as you're prepared for dormitory sleeping!!). We'd thoroughly recommend for a group of friends who enjoy the outdoors and don't mind a walk and a bit of mud! I walked there from Box Hill and Westhumble station - very pleasant 1hr stroll.

This youth hostel, tucked away in the woods, looks like a fairy tale cottage. I camped in its grounds, where there are also two pre-erected safari tents geared for families. There is a well-equipped kitchen - I was particularly impressed to find a number of proper wine glasses! The sitting room is cosy and comfortable. The downside for those sleeping inside is that the toilet and shower facilities are in a separate building; that said, it’s only about thirty seconds away. For the campers it’s a longer walk. There is no signal or WiFi in the hostel, but if you go and sit on the bench in the front garden overlooking a field, you may be able to pick one up. The staff are extremely welcoming and helpful. You can’t bring a car to the hostel so drivers need to leave their vehicles at some distance and walk through the woodland. As a cyclist, I cycled from Boxhill and Westhumble station, which is pretty close, along a road and then across a field and up a bridleway. For variety, I cycled back to Dorking station via Denbies Vinyard - at one point a delightful downhill ride on a small, quiet, windy lane. I was so impressed with the place that a few days later I booked myself into the hostel for a few nights later in the autumn.

Just returned from a most enjoyable stay from Tanners Hatch, Kitchen was very well equipped.
Great base for walking/cycling and National trust property. I understand that in the week it’s usually not busy but it was filled with delightful people on training for YHA plus other interesting guests.
Had a great time!!!!!!! Don’t let the fact the toilets are outside put you off!!!! It was all kept clean and very homely.

We recommend this really cool hostel we stayed at last night - YHA Tanners Hatch near Dorking. You have to hike to it from your car for about half an hour (keep an eye out for the small "Youth Hostel" signs along the way and go with the directions on the website, not the satnav). Once you get there, you're out in nature (ignore the planes flying overhead). It's really rustic. Our girls had fun pretending to be the girls in Little House on the Prairie. The family tents are cosy with a DIY woodburning fire for heat. Comfy beds. Clean and well organized and maintained. The service was amazing - Andy was a super-host! Helped direct us there after dark and stayed late for our unintentionally delayed check-in. He even helped us look for our lost car key on our way out in the morning. ||We hope to come back again. Fun and memorable!

A cottage in the woods with an open fire. Simple and beautiful. Car-free (they have to park up the track) which to me is like gold. Birdsong, owls, wild flowers, friendly people. If you are driving check the sat nav for the National Trust car park! Otherwise it’s a lovely walk from Dorking. Take your own food and cook in the cosy kitchen. Fabulous walking on the North Downs Way - I walked 12 miles to Guildford or you can walk to Leith Hill. Superb views, peace and quiet.

I have been visiting this lovely little hostel for over 40 years & it's always a joy to return. It is a small cottage, restored from derelict in the 1940s and modernised several times since. It is beautifully kept by Andy, the warden.||In such a place, surrounded by woods & fields (and at times lots of mud!) one appreciates the quietness & stillness of the natural world and the old fashioned art of conversation. Communal tea drinking is a must!||Here I have met people from all over the world, always surprised that such a haven can be so close to London.||What some see as its disadvantages to others like me are its merits - no car access & no technological connectivity.||Grab a pair of walking boots or a bike that likes a bit of mud & enjoy a break away from it all!

Camping can be in your own tent or their pre erected tents or fully furnished with kitchen and sofa escape tent! The main house has 2 big dorms and a room with a double bed in between. Toilets and showers are in a separate block. Kitchen has tons of cutlery, utensils and pans etc. It’s a great hideaway! We will return. Be careful of the low ceilings though!
